Course Curriculum
Program Description
The Associate of Applied Science in
Emergency Medical Technology-Paramedic program is designed to prepare
first-year students to sit for the National Registry as EMT-Basic to
become Louisiana State certified. This certification is a prerequisite
for entry into the second year, paramedic component of the program.
Students may choose to go to work as EMT-Basics or to continue
immediately into the paramedic program. Those who graduate can go to
work as entry-level EMT Paramedics. The curriculum complies with the
Louisiana Department of Transportation’s standard curriculum recognized
by the State Bureau of EMS. The program was designed to meet the
standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Emergency Medical
Science Programs. Although a terminal degree program, general education
requirements as well as some of the technical courses may be
transferable to a variety of baccalaureate programs.
Objectives

To enable students to acquire the general education competencies
expected of an Associate of Applied Science graduate

To provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for
achieving Louisiana State certification and National Registry as EMT
Paramedics

To provide students with the necessary medical knowledge and skills to
function as paramedics in a variety of settings
Expected Learning Outcomes
Students completing the Associate of

Utilize medical technology.

Apply required skills necessary for entry level paramedic.

Perform skills relevant to role as entry level EMT Paramedic.

Requirements
General Requirements
Students wishing to earn an Associate of Applied Science in Emergency
Medical Technology-Paramedic at South Louisiana Community College:
·
Must attain a minimum grade of “C” in each course prescribed within the
EMTP curriculum
·
Must earn at least one-half of the hours in the major through courses
taken at SLCC
·
Must earn a minimum of 18 hours toward the degree in residence at SLCC
·
Must earn 12 of the last 18 hours of the degree program in residence at
SLCC
·
Must earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on all courses
applied to the degree as well as an adjusted SLCC cumulative grade point
average of 2.0
·
May repeat only three courses in the EMTP curriculum and then only
twice. Upon receipt of a second grade of “D,” “F,” or “NC” in a course,
the student will not be permitted to continue in the EMTP curriculum
·
Must provide evidence of hospitalization insurance to the EMTP
departmental office during the first week of the semester when enrolled
in clinical/field practicum
·
Must provide documentation from a physician verifying ability to perform
duties of an EMT
·
Must adhere to policies prescribed by each clinical agency when involved
in clinical or field experiences at that agency
·
Must provide evidence of current CPR certification prior to the first
day of class
·
Must arrange transportation to and from hospitals, ambulance stations,
or any other assigned areas for clinical laboratory practice
Re-entry Requirements
Emergency Medical Technician – Basic*
(EMTP 1010 and EMTP 1020)
·
Must achieve an adjusted cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in the
EMTP curriculum
·
Must provide the EMTP Department with a physician-completed EMTP medical
examination report form and the accompanying lab work
·
Must purchase the required EMTP class and clinical/field uniform(s),
stethoscope, and penlight
·
Must assume the cost of the National Registry EMT-Basic examination
·
Must be 18 years old to sit for National Registry
Emergency Medical Technician –
Paramedic* (Third and Fourth Semesters)
·
Must achieve an adjusted cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in the
EMTP curriculum
·
Must be currently registered as an EMT-Basic with the Louisiana Bureau
of EMS
·
Must have a current EMTP medical examination report on file with the
EMTP Departmental office
·
Must purchase the required EMTP class and clinical/field uniform(s) and
equipment
·
Must assume the cost of the National Registry EMT Paramedic examination
and Louisiana state certification fees
·
Paramedic students must agree and pay for criminal background
investigation and drug screening
Re-entry Requirements
Emergency Medical Technician –
Paramedic*
(Third and Fourth Semesters)
·
Meet the SLCC eligibility requirements and be in good standing with the
community college
·
Meet the health status requirement as outlined for all students
·
Meet eligibility as defined by the Louisiana BEMS (i.e. criminal
background, etc.)
·
Students who leave the program prior to the completion of EMTP 2041
AND seek re-entry less than 12 months from the date of departure may
be allowed to reenter at the point of departure pending a demonstration
of proficiency in all previous course work. Proficiency is demonstrated
by:
·
Passing a written examination for each course completed previously, and
·
Passing a skills exam for each course completed previously
·
Students who fail to show proficiency as defined above will be required
to retake those courses
·
Advanced placement will NOT be given for any clinical course previously
completed. All students re-entering the paramedic program will be
required to complete ALL clinical requirements for the program
·
Students who leave the program after completing ENTP 2041 AND
seek re-entry less than 12 months from the date of departure may be
allowed to reenter at the point of departure pending a demonstration of
proficiency in all previous coursework. Proficiency is demonstrated by:

Passing the comprehensive written examination for EMTP 2080, and
·
Passing the comprehensive practical examination for EMTP 2080
·
Students who pass the comprehensive exams (“a” and “b” above) may
re-enter and complete only the field internship requirements of EMTP
2080
·
Students who fail to show proficiency as defined above will be required
to retake the entire program
·
Students who seek to re-enter more than 12 months from the date of
departure from their previous course will NOT be given advanced
placement consideration and will be required to complete the entire
curricula
·
Students forced to leave the program due to extenuating circumstances
beyond their control (i.e. military deployment, serious illness, etc.)
who seek to re-enter more than 12 months after their departure may
request special permission from the Dean of Instruction and
Effectiveness for advanced placement. The application should fully
document the reason for withdrawing from the program and the courses in
which they are requesting credit. If the Dean grants permission for
re-entry, the student must conform to the requirements in 4 or 5 above
depending upon their point of departure
*The EMTP Department reserves the right to limit enrollment in EMTP
courses to insure the efficient use of resources. When enrollment is
limited, students will be selected by academic ranking according to
grade point average in the EMTP curriculum.
Special Conditions
Due to the nature of the Emergency Medical Services and the requirements
placed on
training by State and National agencies, the classroom, laboratory,
clinical, and field experience hours may exceed those expected for the
credit awarded that course.
Employment
opportunities may be limited for students with back problems or other
medical or physical conditions which limit ability to lift or function
in long periods of physical exertion (such as patient movement and
cardio-pulmonary resuscitation).
