Course Curriculum
Program Description
The Care & Development of Young Children Degree is designed to prepare
individuals to be effective child care professionals in a variety of
settings. The curriculum provides both theory and skills for those
currently working in the field of child development, the child care
industry, or for those who are preparing to go to work in any of those
fields. It is beneficial to those who want to become early childhood
daycare providers educators and early interventionists.
The program is structured to prepare students to work with children in
daycare settings and in a variety of early childhood settings. There is
a broad theoretical and practical knowledge base and many field
experiences that are in keeping with the best practices recommended by
the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
Objectives
§
To enable students to acquire the general education competencies
expected of an associate of arts degree graduate
§
To provide a curriculum that will enable students to work effectively as
para-professionals in community programs such as HeadStart and childcare
facilities
§
To provide some of the basic coursework that will allow for transfer to
undergraduate programs at 4-year colleges.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Students completing the Associate of Arts Degree in Care and Development
of Young Children will
§
Formulate educational programming for young children in childcare
facilities
§
Demonstrate developmentally appropriate practices in the design and
delivery of programs for young children in childcare facilities
§
Identify appropriate practices in the delivery of childcare/education
services
§
Manage all aspects of programming for young children and their families,
including those appropriate for children with disabilities
§
Construct close relationships with children and their families
Specific Degree
Requirements
Students wishing to
earn an Associate of Arts Degree majoring in Care & Development of Young
Children from South Louisiana Community College must:
§
Earn a grade of “C” or higher in each of the following courses: English
1010, English 1020, and MATH 1100
§
Earn a grade of “C” or higher in each course in the major (24 hours)
§
Earn at least one-half of the hours in the major through courses taken
at SLCC
§
Earn a minimum of 18 hours toward the degree in residence at SLCC
§
Earn 12 of the last 18 hours of the degree program in residence at SLCC
§
Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on all courses
applied to the degree as well as an adjusted SLCC cumulative grade point
average of 2.0

Arts courses applicable for transfer.
