3.7.5 Faculty Role in Governance

The institution publishes policies on the responsibility and authority of faculty in academic and governance matters.

Narrative:   

The Committee Operations Handbook (1) outlines the shared governance model utilized at South Louisiana Community College (SLCC).  As noted in the introduction:

South Louisiana Community College holds that governance is the shared responsibility of all members of the College community.  To fulfill this responsibility, faculty and administration agree to establish collaborative bodies known as standing committees, which are charged to perform specific governance duties requiring faculty, administration, and, in some cases, student involvement.  The standing committees are divided into two groups:  College and Faculty Senate. (p. 1)

The Committee Operations Handbook outlines the responsibility of faculty in academic matters.  College committees include:  Academic Standards, Curriculum, and Library.  The purpose of the Academic Standards Committee is

  • To recommend policies regarding student matriculation
  • Act on student appeals related to academic standards, for selected issues, serve as the next level of appeal after Dean’s review;
  • Advise the Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs on policies and standards regarding all academic programs. (p. 9)

The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is

  • To make recommendations on policies and procedures regarding curriculum, academic programs;
  • Serve as review board for proposed courses and curricula changes and make recommendations for accepted changes. (p. 10)

The purpose of the Library Committee is:

  • To recommend library policies and
  • To assist in the planning of library programs, purchase of library equipment and materials, and library services;
  • To obtain approval for policies, programs and services from appropriate authorities. (p. 11)

Faculty Senate Committees include:  Academic Planning and Development and Student Rating of Instruction. The purpose of the Academic Planning and Development Committee is to present to the Senate for recommendations to the Chancellor of the College plans for the development of the academic stature, the areas of emphasis, and the direction of the College.  These plans should include immediate goals as well as those requiring long-range planning. (p. 17) The Academic Planning and Development Committee members are exclusively faculty.

The purpose of the Student Rating of Instruction Committee is to administer Article 4.5 of the Faculty Senate Constitution and implement policies concerning student evaluation of instruction. (p. 21) Faculty and students are represented on the Student Rating of Instruction Committee.

Further, the Faculty Senate of SLCC is an active body and has been in existence since the inception of the College.  Examples of items addressed by the Faculty Senate include suggestions in regard to communication between administration and faculty, faculty work hours, faculty compensation for Large Group Instruction courses, and faculty semester work load. Faculty Senate also prepares nominations of officers, and revises the Faculty Senate Constitution as needed. (2)
