Narrative:
General Education core competencies have been identified and are published in the South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) Catalog. (1) The General Education core competencies state that students should be able to reason logically, solve problems, communicate effectively, and relate to the world around them. General education competencies not only enhance awareness of the world and the people in it, but also foster an appreciation of the arts and humanities, encourage insight into the social and behavioral sciences, and provide a basic understanding of mathematics and scientific principles.
Documentation that graduates have met these competencies is provided through two general assessment approaches. The Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) test provides standardized assessments of the learning outcomes. (2) and (3) Additionally, SLCC’s Institutional Effectiveness process includes outcomes assessments that encompass the College’s general education core competencies.
An inventory of SLCC’s general education competencies and assessment measures for each of these competencies follows.
