3.4.6 Practices for Awarding Credit
|
3.4.6 Practices for Awarding Credit The institution employs sound and acceptable practices for determining the amount and level of credit awarded for courses, regardless of format or mode of delivery.
Narrative: South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) uses the Carnegie Unit basic formula of 1 unit equals 1 hour of lecture, or 2 hours of lab with homework or 3 hours of lab without homework. Courses at SLCC are delivered through regular semester formats, summer formats, half-semester formats, and intersession formats. A limited number of courses are delivered through eLearning technologies including video conference and Joule class management system. The amount of work required in all courses is the same regardless of length of delivery or mode of delivery. An example is BIOL 2017 Survey of Human Anatomy and Physiology (3-2-4) which indicates during a regular fall or spring semester the course meets in lecture mode 3 hours per week and in lab mode 2 hours per week. Students receive 4 credits for the course. (Catalog p. 104) (1) All courses offered at SLCC are lower level undergraduate courses. Courses numbered 0-0999 are developmental, and credits earned may not be used to satisfy degree requirements. Courses numbered 1000-1999 are freshman-level courses designed primarily for students of this classification. Courses numbered 2000-2999 are sophomore-level courses designed primarily for students of this classification. (Catalog p. 103) (2) Once a year, a faculty member from SLCC attends a statewide meeting to determine statewide general education articulation. SLCC courses are accepted at other colleges and universities across the State. (BoR Articulation Matrix, (3) ULL Course Equivalency, (4) 2+2 Agreements, (5))
