Narrative:

South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) conducts continuing education courses.  Community members, especially those from non-profit agencies are encouraged to hold meetings on the campuses free of charge in order to expand SLCC’s exposure to citizens.  Additionally, a few SLCC courses require Service Learning as a component of the course.

Expected Outcomes
Expected outcomes related to community and public service at SLCC includes:

•  Increasing workforce instructional offerings and support services through non-credit format
•  Increasing the number of students participating in Service Learning courses
•  Increasing community participation in SLCC activities and events
•  Assessing the effectiveness of partnerships and collaborative agreements with other educational entities

Assessing Outcome Achievement
The assessment methods used to determine outcome achievement were surveys and reports.  SLCC increased workforce instructional offerings through the British Petroleum (BP) Oil Spill Clean Up courses offered.   There was a 4% increase in the number of Service Learning students.  External (non-SLCC) organizations/agencies increased usage 57%at SLCC.  Eighty-eight percent of the agencies were “extremely satisfied” with their partnerships with SLCC. Using Results for Improvement
In each of the community and service related areas there were increases from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010.  For instance, there were no workforce instructional non-credit offerings in 2008-2009, but in 2009-2010 there were twelve sessions presented.  Service Learning has increased at SLCC and more community agencies have used the facilities for training opportunities (Source:  2009-2010 Annual Plan Report, CHAN UP 1 & 3; IE UP 4 & 7).
